Technical Data
Start up date: May 2008
Goal: Sales of Gas and injection into the natural gas grid
Type: Two step plant
Input: Corn silage
The
original goal of the Lower Saxony farmers in Ronnenberg close to Hanover was to build a
classic biogas plant with a combined heat and power plant, to produce
electricity and sell heat. After
intensive talks with the public utility company in Hanover, a plan was created where the biogas
would be purified and injected into the natural gas supply.
Since
the spring of 2008, the farmers have supplied the plant with corn silage. The generated gas, around 600 m³ (~21.000
ft³) raw biogas per hour, is sold to the municipal utility of Hanover. They condition the gas and then
provide it to their electricity customers for use. Combined heat and power plants are run with
this gas.
It's
all arranged for the long run: the supply contract between BiRo GmbH and the
municipal utility lasts for 20 years.
This innovative project received an award, even before being completed.
